New Bach Piece Found

"BERLIN (AP) - Experts have discovered a previously unknown work by Johann Sebastian Bach in documents taken from a German library shortly before it was heavily damaged by fire, researchers said Wednesday...

Bach composed the work for a soprano, to be accompanied by strings or a harpsichord, to mark the 52nd birthday of the duke of Saxony-Weimar, for whom he worked as a court organist, the foundation said.

A solo soprano was to sing a 12-verse poem beginning with the duke's motto, Everything with God and Nothing Without Him, written by Johann Anton Mylius, it said.

The work was Bach's only known strophic aria, in which several stanzas are set to the same music, and the precise date made it valuable to researchers studying the development of the German composer's style, the foundation said."

Hey, I just figured out how to delete posts! It's a shame I didn't really want to delete that... oh well.

Hi "see", very clever nickname! You know, reading this article reminds me that these composers had to write out all their music by hand. :O And they did it so neatly and precisely. Very impressive...

Yes,it amazes me when I think of all the work those composers went through to compile the music masterpieces they wrote.

It's a shame after all that work the composers did, that now not many people play or listen to classical music.

Well, I don't know... seems to me alot of people like classical music. There just aren't many that like it exclusively and dislike everything else.

But it is hard to find people who play classical music and people who teach classical music.

If you say so... I haven't experienced that at all but I guess it's possible in some circles. :(

I play classical music, and I know it's not as popular, but I think that a good amount of people play it and listen to it. Classical music can be challenging though, so that could also discourage some people from playing it. People think that classical music can be relaxing, so I've heard that they will sometimes play it during the dinner hour.

Very good point, Sara! I think some people might be intimidated by that type of music, because as we all know, it takes alot of practice and study to fully understand it. I know when I first started focusing on piano, I was totally daunted by any type of classical music. I remember being scared of "Fur Elise" for heaven's sake, and that piece is easy as pie. :)

In the past, I have been very frustrated by certain classical pieces(still am!). Classical music take alot of work and practice, and since classical music isn't my passion in life, I don't devote all of my spare time to playing it.

At 6:34 PM, Blogger Ashley said...

No, me neither. In fact, I don't devote much time at all. :( Of course it's mostly because my piano is REALLY out of tune and the high notes sound horrible!! What pieces are you working on Sara? Still playing the Nutcracker?

At 6:56 PM, Anonymous Sara Haught said...

No, I gave up on that. I'll pick up with it again in the winter- near Christmastime. :) Those pieces in the book I'm in are really, really, REALLY hard! I'm just working on various classical pieces, not very well known ones.

I'm still working on the Messiah, the pieces are really, really beautiful, but I haven't really practiced it as much as I should be. :(

Classical music is challenging, people can get discourage unless they love it and devote their time to it. I get frustrated with Schubert's Impromptus because somedays it is good and other days it is terrible. But I have to work on it. People may also look at a piece and say it is too hard. When I first looked at my new Bach piece I thought it was too hard till I played it.

Very true Sara E., I think you're completely right about needing to have a passion for that type of music. Otherwise we would give up pretty quickly. :) Of course, there are some exceptions to that, I know some annoying people that are very good at playing classical music, but they only do it because they have to not because they really enjoy it. I guess some people are born with that kind of ability and they can accomplish things without really loving it. It's actually really irritating. :)As for Schubert's Impromptu's, good luck with that, they sound like pieces that would frustrate even the most learned player. :)

How long have you been playing piano Sara E?

I have been playing for 7 years, but just in the last 3 years I have been playing classical music intensely. How long have you been playing Sara?

I have been playing since I was five, so 11 years. Right now I'm focusing on playing hymns because my pastor wants me to start playing for the evening service at my church.

Hey, that's cool Sara, you didn't tell me that! See, you shouldn't have worried so much about your playing at the nursing homes, your pastor was totally impressed by you!!:)

:) well....I don't know about totally impressed; the nursing home crowd is pretty easy to please. :) I just hope I do well playing for the evening service; I just get scared every time I think about it!!!!!!!!!! :(

Well, what I meant was your pastor must have been impressed if he invited you to play at night. :) You're really brave though Sara ( and so are you Sara E ) I could NEVER play in public.

I personally don't like playing in public; I don't really want to play for the evening service- I'm terrified!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Sara, I'm sure you will be nervous at first but then you'll get used to it!!! :)

I have been playing morning and evening service for my church since I was ten. Sara, don't think about and relax. The worse thing is to play when you are tense, I have learned that. Playing for a recital in front of my teacher and other people I don't know, I get little nervous in the beginning then after I am playing my pieces I am fine. Sara, do you teach yourself or do you have a teacher?

Thanks for the advice Sara, I'm playing next Sunday- so I'm trying to brace myself for it! I will try to take your advice though, and calm down! I am so afraid of making mistakes, and I really need to get over that. I do have a teacher, which helps alot. She gives me so many good tips!

You might never get over of being afraid of making mistakes. I am still afraid of making mistakes. You will do fine.
